Kamaboko Flowers and ” Can you name the white balled candy?”

16 Nov

Flower Bento

I haven’t had time to really explore my new bento books, so I had to go with an ol’ standby bento – the sandwich! 🙂  Although, I did manage to jazz them up a bit with the kamaboko flowers.  I’m trying to think if there are any tips to be given from this bento, but it’s pretty much my fast and easy bento.  To make the sandwiches, I make one normal sized sandwich, cut off the crusts because Ms. Little Bubbles doesn’t like the crust, and then cut it into four. I then line the middle of the bento with lettuce, cut the kamaboko, peel a cutie and then added some Japanese cracker/candies.  Okay… I just realized that I do not know the name of the small round balls in the bento.  I’m sure my Japanese bento blogger friends can help me out with this one!  Wow… I can’t believe I’m forgetting the name.

Rainbow Bread Bento

12 Nov

Rainbow Bread

During our recent trip, we stopped by a bakery that featured some really good pastries and food!  Oh my… I think I gained five pounds by just walking into the bakery! One of the breads that attracted my kids was the rainbow bread.  It’s very colorful, but I have to admit, I can’t help but think this bread is not very healthy.  I mean really, how can it be, it must be filled with a lot of food coloring.  But, ah well, vacations are about having fun and getting things/food you usually don’t.  So… we got the bread.  Although, I’m not sure if my daughter likes it that much.  I think it’s too bland for her.

For this bento, I made a quick rainbow bread sandwich filled with ham and cheese.  I cut the sandwich with a flower sandwich cutter (I got it as a gift, but I think it was from Williams-Sonoma).  I thought the flower looked bare, so I added a small cheese flower in the middle and added black sesame seeds.

Everyone Has A First – Here Is My First Bento

18 Oct
My Very First Bento

The month of October is a crazy month for my family.  Thus, I’ve opted to simplify my life and order school lunch for Ms. Little Bubbles.  I’m not very happy about it, especially since it comes at cost of $6 a lunch!  Wow! And I don’t even know if she is eating it all.  You know, growing up, my school lunches were 45 cents.  Let me say that again… 45 cents.  I don’t consider myself that old, but wow, times have changed.  Hummm…. maybe I am old.  LOL.

So, given my lack of current bentos, I thought I’d dig deep and show you my very first bento.  I highly suggest that if you are going to start bento making, take pictures! And if you are brave enough, share them with the world.  My first bento was not very imaginative, or neat, but i think it was a little balanced.  However, what got me psyched about making bentos was the feedback I got from my friends on Facebook.  They were great, and made me want to do it over and over again.  After this first bento, I made a few missteps (another post) but as with all things in life, practice counts, support makes you feel fantastic and a little imagination always helps.  🙂  Ahh… Life is like a bento box.  LOL.

Ten Minute Hello Kitty Sandwich

14 Sep

Hello Kitty Sandwich

Just like the day before, I had no idea what to make this morning.  😉  Thus, another sandwich day for Ms. Little Bubbles.  Making this Hello Kitty sandwich is really fast and easy (you just need the right tools) and requires little brain power at 5:30am!  I did watch the clock and it only took me 10 minutes to make this bento.  My brain was a little fuzzy, so I added the additional hearts without really thinking about the “layout” and feel like it might be a bit too much.  But that’s okay…. 🙂

Super Quick and Easy Sandwich Bento

9 Sep

Soynut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

I woke up this morning and prayed that I had bread in the house. LOL. I had no leftovers to put in a bento and hoped I at least had bread to make a sandwich. This bento is my super quick and easy bento. I didn’t even have lettuce, so I used gai lan (Chinese broccoli) to cover the divider. I used three cute food dividers to make the bento a little cuter, but other than that… it’s a no frills bento.

Another Must For Me – A Quail Egg Nori Punch

31 Aug

Family of Happy Sandwiches

I think this is an easy bento that anyone can do.  I made simple sandwiches and used a sandwich cutter to make them into flowers.  I then cut a small circle of cheese and put happy little faces on them.  However, the challenge of this bento is the facial features.  I searched high and low for a nori punch that had small enough features that would fit just right when I made this type of bento.  And you’d never guess what I found – a quail egg nori punch!

I won’t include a link to this as it’s hard to find, but do a search online for “quail egg nori punch” and a listing of possible sellers will pop up.  But this is a punch that I love and use all the time.  So, in my opinion, it is a must.

#1 Bento Tool to Have – A Nori Punch

16 Aug

A Pair of Happy Bentos

Little Ms. Bubbles doesn’t have summer camp or school for the next few weeks, so I’ll be posting some old bento that haven’t made it to this blog yet.  The above bento was made for Little Ms. Bubbles and her Cousin T.  I usually don’t include a cupcake or super sweets in my lunches, but Cousin T was visiting and I wanted to give them a special bento for their picnic.

The pair of bentos above illustrates a perfect example of why everyone needs a nori punch.  If there is only one bento making item that you need to get, please make it a nori punch.  I promise, a nori punch will make any lunch look cute instantly.  Yes, the picks add cuteness too, but the nori face gives the bento a personality.

I purchased my nori punches online.  I did a quick search for “nori punches” or “nori cutters” and stumbled across a few sites.  In a future post I show you which punches I have.

BTW, this bento uses a fake lettuce foil instead of real lettuce.  I found it at Daiso and thought it was kind of unusual.  I generally don’t use it, but if I don’t have any real lettuce on hand, it’s a nice stand-in.

No Frills Bento – Just a Cute Hello Kitty Bento Box

13 Aug

Hello Kitty Soy Nut Butter & Jelly Sandwich

Yesterday was a rough morning for me.  Little Sweet Pea got up at ~4:30am, which is insanely early for me.  I tried to get him back to sleep but then Little Ms. Bubbles woke up with the noise and then everyone was up.  Whooohoo.  🙂

When it came to putting together Little Ms. Bento’s bento, it was thrown together with little thought.  I like this bento box because it’s an easy standby that requires little decorating of the food because the box is so darn cute.  I made her a soy nut butter and jelly sandwich, cut off the edges and placed it in half of the bento.  The other side is strawberries cut into slices and carrots that I cut with my vegetable cutter.  Another reason why I really like this bento box is that it comes with a divided container section.  Therefore, I’m able to put “wet” stuff on that side and the liquid won’t run into the other section.  By no means is it leak proof, so I won’t put soup or anything it it.  But if I had tofu, it would have been perfect for that.

Happy Thursday Sandwich Bento

4 Aug

Just Another Sandwich Day

Happy Thursday Everyone.  The weekend is almost here.

I struggled with this morning’s bento.  Originally, I was going to do a simple sandwich and not do a bento.  But I have a hard time doing that.  I always feel like I need to spruce it up.  🙂

Today’s bento is rather simple.  This is a good example of a bento with no accessories.  Well, unless you consider the lettuce as an accessory.  I cut the ham and cheese sandwich into four and arranged it in the top section of a two tiered bento box.  I added the carrots on the side to make everything fit tightly.  The bottom tier has strawberries, Japanese crackers and kamaboko.  The kamaboko adds a nice punch of color to the bottom tier.

Panda Express

29 Jul

When I woke up this morning I realized I had no leftovers. So I was thinking I would make some gyoza for Little Miss Bubbles. But I opted to hit the snooze button. So….. She got a sandwich instead.

I should have used a bento box with a separate inside container to hold the fruit as it was pretty juicy. I instead lined half the box with plastic wrap and covered it with lettuce to hide the plastic. I suppose it worked just as good.

The sandwich was pretty bare, so I decorated it with the pandas. 🙂

Contents: watermelon, strawberries, pineapple, soy nut butter sandwich, and carrots.
